COVID-19 Event Planning

We are currently planning to address the risks of COVID-19 by

  • requiring appropriate personal protective equipment and social distancing techniques at events.
  • adjusting event day agendas to reduce contact between teams, including running smaller and remote/virtual events.
  • shifting tournaments later in the season to allow us to collect more information and best practices.

Because each program has unique requirements and restrictions, each program will have its own set of specific adaptations.

As we plan for our competition seasons, we will follow all guidance from state and federal health officials, as well as the requests and requirements of our gracious event hosts. We will also follow the guidelines handed down by the competition organizing nonprofits (e.g. FIRST’s COVID-19 Resources and RECF’s Season Restart Guide).

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, our plans may change throughout the season in response. We will keep a date-stamped, updated version of our plans on this page throughout the 2020-2021 seasons. In addition, we will make any expected modifications and requirements clear to teams on event registration pages that we control, and contact teams directly before their events to remind them of any changes of the format of the event. Event dates will be updated on the WV Robotics Alliance calendar, as always.

We look forward to working with you throughout this challenging season.

FIRST LEGO League Challenge (formerly FLL)

Remote scrimmages will be held in late fall and winter. All teams will be invited to the State Championship event in the spring. Depending on the situation at the time, the Championship may 1) be a standard tournament, but with smaller groups of teams scheduled at a time, 2) use remote judging and a “siloed” match schedule to reduce team interaction, or 3) be completely remote (virtual).

We have scheduled a remote optional scrimmage on November 14th, and will hold a later scrimmage to test the official FIRST Remote Event Hub software. We are tentatively scheduling this scrimmage for March 20th.

FIRST has announced that the Detroit World Championship will shift to early August 2021. We are currently planning for the State Championship to occur on the weekend of April 17th. We have not finalized this decision.

FIRST Tech Challenge

Small remote scrimmages may be organized in the fall and winter to give teams optional, intermediate deadlines to aim for. The State Championship will be held in the spring. Depending on the situation at the time, the Championship may 1) be a standard FTC tournament, 2) have remote judging and apply social distancing practices to reduce team interaction, or 3) be completely remote.  FIRST has suggested we do not allow out-of-state teams to compete, but we have not finalized our decision.

We have tentatively scheduled a remote optional scrimmage for December 5th. We may also hold a spring scrimmage to test the new FIRST Remote Event Hub.

FIRST Robotics Competition

All of our teams have been contacted by Daphne Frownfelter to schedule an informational session on HQ’s current intentions. Because of the recycled game announcement, FRC teams are in a unique position to design and prepare remotely for the 2021 season. If you need local technical support, want to collaborate between teams, or would like an outside opinion on your team’s plans for the season, contact our WV FIRST® Senior Mentor, Ryan Utzman at rutzman@firstinspires.org.

FIRST has announced that the Detroit World Championship will shift to early August 2021. This gives events flexibility to run later in the school year or into the summer.
